We'd like to share some do-it-yourself resources you can use to learn about your rights and your options, and educate yourself about the questions you can and should be asking.
You may or may not need to hire a lawyer. You may want to look into alternative approaches to help decide whether you want to handle this on your own or seek professional counsel. We encourage everyone to look into a “DIY” approach. You may be surprised how much you can learn and how much action you can take on your own.

The CRD is the California State agency responsible for enforcing California’s civil rights laws at work, in housing, and public accommodation. Before you can initiate a lawsuit for an employer’s violation of your California employment civil rights, you must first file a complaint and obtain a right to sue notice from the CRD. We regularly assist our clients in this process.
The EEOC is the federal agency that enforces federal civil rights laws prohibiting workplace discrimination, harassment and retaliation because of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. Before you can initiate a lawsuit for an employer’s violation of your federal employment civil rights, you must first file a complaint and obtain a right to sue notice from the EEOC. We commonly help our clients through this process.
The EDD is the California State organization responsible for administering Unemployment, Disability, and Paid Family Leave benefits. The EDD website has helpful resources, forms, and FAQ pages for employees who may be eligible for benefits.
This California State agency accepts and adjudicates wage claims by employees relating to unpaid wages, overtime, or vacation pay pursuant to the California Labor Code; it also investigates workplace retaliation complaints (other than for workplace discrimination complaints, which is overseen by the DFEH).
California’s state agency protecting workers by enforcing labor laws to ensure their health, safety, and well-being in the workplace. The DIR also oversees California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (“CalOSHA”) and the Division of Workers Compensation.
The LWDA oversees seven state departments, boards and panels that serve California workers and businesses. It is responsible for workplace development, unemployment benefits, workplace safety, and more.
